I write about my Mom a lot, about her great sense of humor-- or what's left of it, as
Alzheimer's takes its toll. She's quite a character.
My Dad was cool, too-- he loved:
*traveling (70's trips to Europe and the Caribbean were his favorites!)
*dancing (He and Mom took ballroom classes from Johnny Greene when I was very young,
and I learned to waltz by standing on Dad's feet! I was doing the "cha-cha" by age four.)
*singing (which would start ten miles into ANY road trip we took-- if you were too shy to
sing, you could vacate the car!)
*photography (He NEVER went anywhere without a camera! or several)
I found a picture recently of my Dad taken when he was in his mid-twenties, stationed in
England during World War II. Evidently, he had been able to take a side-trip to Scotland.
This is what he sent Mom:
This was on the back:
I found no pictures of the beautiful countryside, of castles or monuments...
I am reminded of my own shenanigans-- visiting 8 states in 8 days (in a Geo Metro), then
driving to Texas JUST SO I COULD SAY I DID...seeking out "Hell, Michigan", because it
sounded like fun... renting a car for three hours in Cedar Rapids so I could visit the "Field of
Dreams"... and that's just the start. Knowing myself, and the fact that people tell me I'm a lot
like my Dad, I can imagine what was going through his mind prior to his Scotland excursion...
"Wouldn't Louise think it was funny if I sent a picture of me in a kilt???"
...And that's what he did.
Missing my Dad...
